For everyone

Anyone can benefit from and enjoy training in the art of Taekwon-Do. At Elgin School of Taekwon-Do we offer a wide variety of classes designed to suit a diverse range of people. Police, nurses, aircrew, graduates, school kids and mothers are just a few examples of those who have trained with us over the years.

Taekwon-Do offers a fantastic range of benefits, both physical and mental, which can enrich your life in many ways. Some students simply enjoy the keep-fit aspects of physical training, whether it be kicking targets or basic movements. For others its the invaluable knowledge and confidence which comes from self-defence training. The study of moral culture and traditional Korean terms and theories adds a deeper meaning for many students. The opportunity to challenge oneself through competition or striving to reach the goal of Black Belt is what keeps some inspired. For many it's the beauty of the movements in the 24 patterns and the co-ordination and concentration required to master them, which keeps them interested over the years. Whatever attracts you to Taekwon-Do, you can be sure that it will give you a sense of pride and achievement that will keep you coming back for more. Visit our "Why Taekwon-Do?" and "What is Taekwon-Do?" pages to find out more.

Our classes are formal but friendly and beginners and experienced students are always welcome. Training sessions include a combination of the following elements;

  • Warm-up and Stretching
  • Strength and Fitness Training
  • Fundamental Movements
  • Patterns
  • Power and Target Training
  • Non Contact Sparring
  • Cool-down

Exercises are mainly practised alone therefore the body sets its own limits and injuries are rare. Each student trains according to their own ability and goals. Beginners Classes and Refresher Courses are currently available. For those students who wish to follow the traditional grading programme, training twice weekly with regular seminars and gradings, it's possible to attain the level of Black Belt within 3 years.

Your first class is free so why not come along and give it a go!? Contact us if you have any questions.

Ladies Taekwon-Do

Ladies only classes started in August 2001, and the popularity of the programme has exceeded our expectations. Ladies of all ages participate in this class, each performing to the best of her ability and setting her own limits, in a private atmosphere surrounded by like-minded women.

An ongoing open dialogue is encouraged between instructor and student in this class to ensure that the ladies get exactly what they want from their self-defence training. It quickly became apparent that the ladies wanted more than just a keep fit class, and were keen to follow the Tae-kwon Do syllabus and achieve the same goals as other club members. Since these classes began many of the students have achieved black belt status. Please visit our black belts page for details.

New students are always made welcome in to the group and encouraged to work at their own pace. If you would like to come along purely for the exercise or just to learn some self defence, that's fine. Gradings are not compulsary.

Kids Taekwon-Do

KICK START is the name of our children's programme and it's guaranteed to be good learning and great fun.

Although originally introduced as a method of self defence for adult military personnel, it is now recognised that the moral and physical training in Taekwon-do offers many benefits to children.

  • Self esteem development
  • Confidence building
  • Discipline
  • Learning to respect others
  • Improving Co-ordination, suppleness and concentration
  • Interaction with other kids
  • How to have fun through exercise

Taekwon-do offers several unique benifits to the physical fitness of children. It is mostly practised alone, which means the body sets its own limits. Injuries and strains are rare and the child's physical condition sets the pace.

The training sessions are designed by Master JF Williamson, who is a Fellowship member of the British Association for Physical Training (FBAPT). Classes are taught by Master Williamson and other qualified Black Belt Instructors, some of whom started Taekwon-do as young children themselves.

Classes are well disciplined and students are taught never to misuse the skills they learn. Vital spots of the body will not be taught until the student is older and more mature. Instead, soft target Kick Pads will be used to practise accurate kicking techniques.

Beginners are always welcome so come along and join in!

Girls Taekwon-Do

These classes began in 2005 in order to give young girls an environment in which to build their confidence along side other girls of a similar age before joining the mainstream classes.

These classes are best suited to girls between the ages of 8 and 13.

A female instructor, Mrs. Lesley Williamson IV Degree black belt, has been appointed to these classes which makes students and parents more comfortable with the learning environment. Please see Mrs. Williamson's profile in our black belts section for details of her qualifications.
